The joystick plays a central role in the control of mobile machinery. It is the interface between human operators and machine systems, and as such, it is a safety-critical component. The newly developed Robust Joystick JE from Elobau has been designed to enhance safety, comfort and intuitiveness in the operator-machine interface.
Leading functional safety
The thumbtips are certified to performance level PLd, and the buttons to PLc. The buttons and thumbtips are designed for a service life exceeding four million cycles, maximising safety and productivity by minimising downtime.
A key feature of the new handle is an optimised integrated presence detection. A capacitive sensor foil inside the handle detects whether the joystick is being gripped. This prevents unintentional machine movements caused by accidental contact from the operator.
An optional feature is vibrotactile feedback. In environments with high noise levels and visual distractions, tactile feedback provides an additional communication channel. A vibration motor in the handle generates perceptible tactile signals, with frequency and intensity adjustable via CAN.
Ideal for all environments
Low temperatures are common in the off-highway field. With increasing focus on electric vehicles, where there is no “free” heat from an engine, efficient use of energy is a key requirement. By heating the extremities of the operator, it not only improves operator comfort but also optimises energy use. The handle includes an integrated heater that specifically warms the areas in contact with the user’s hand. Compliant with protection class IP6K9K, the handle is safeguarded against the ingress of dust and water. This makes it suitable for use both inside and outside the cabin.
Enhanced customisation
The handle is highly configurable. The buttons and thumbtips feature RGB LEDs, with colour and brightness controllable via CAN. A variety of colours and shapes, along with the audible and tactile click of the new rectangular buttons, support ergonomically optimised operating logic.
Asymmetrical deflection angles and various actuation types such as detent or overpressure point can also be implemented.
The handle is symmetrically shaped and slightly tilted inwards, allowing for various grip positions to suit individual preferences. The textured surface ensures a secure grip, even in damp or humid conditions.
With a focus on safety, ergonomics and accurate control, the Robust Joystick JE meets the demands of off-highway applications, and offers a robust solution optimised for use in a variety of machines.
