Last month, JCB set the world land speed record of 406.320mph with its hydrogen-powered Hydromax at the Bonneville Salt Flats – the fastest a hydrogen-powered vehicle of any kind has travelled. Here are the behind the scenes.
Driven by Wing Commander Andy Green OBE, the twin-engined streamliner averaged 406.320mph across two FIA-required runs, beating the previous FIA-officiated hydrogen internal combustion benchmark of 185.5mph (BMW H2R, 2004). The record is subject to ratification by the FIA. The car was powered by two of JCB’s own production-based hydrogen digger engines, producing a combined 1,600bhp and built at the company’s factory in Foston, Derbyshire. The run comes 20 years after JCB Dieselmax set the diesel land speed record of 350.092mph, also with Andy Green at the wheel.
