Liebherr has received a Red Dot Design Award for its new specialized log-handling machine.

Close to 5,500 products and inventions from 54 nations were considered for the prestigious awards’ product design category but the design of the L 580 LogHandler XPower was judged deserving of the prize.

The vehicle, which is based on Liebherr’s latest large wheel loader and only recently had its global market launch, has a newly-developed hydraulic combi-grab lift arm, designed to pick up logs with ease and handle loads up to 8.7 tonnes.

Equipped with a smooth speed reduction system, safety and precision are ensured when handling the logs, while the driveline guarantees fuel efficiency without sacrificing acceleration and driving speed.

“The silhouette of the L 580 LogHandler XPower conveys a sense of power and reflects its dynamic driving characteristics. In addition, its compact design allows for easy access for maintenance work,” said a Liebherr spokesperson.

“The tapered engine hood and the generous amount of window space provide the driver with ideal visibility and increased safety near the wheel loader. A number of operations can be customized to create a comfortable working environment.”

The vehicle is set for its exhibition debut at Ligna 2017 in Hanover, Germany, on May 22-26.
