STW extends control unit range

Sensor-Technik Wiedemann (STW) has extended its range of control units for mobile applications. The small ESX-3CS and the company’s next-generation ESX-4CS-GW are being added to the products available.

Developed and produced for use in adverse conditions, the ESX-3CS extends the 32-bit ESX control unit family by a small control unit. The main feature of the unit is that the input and output types are compatible with those of the ESX-3CM.

A STW spokesperson said, “In this way, easy scalability of the functionalities is facilitated for new and existing customers. With a total of 30 analog and digital inputs and outputs in the standard configuration, the ESX-3CS has been designed as a compact control unit with sensor-actuator management.

“It obtains its flexibility through 16 multi-functional inputs, the functionality of which can be adjusted using software. Here the detection of power, voltage, frequencies or digital switching conditions (events) is possible at the input.”

In addition to the inputs, up to 14 outputs are available. Through the parallel switching of several outputs within a group, actuators with higher power requirements can also be controlled. Two of the outputs are designed as low-side outputs and thus facilitate bi-channel shutdown of actuators if required. For communication purposes, the ESX-3CS offers, in addition to the two CAN connections, an optional Ethernet, an RS232 and a LIN interface.

Fourth generation

The ESX-4CS-GW is the first product of the new, fourth generation of control units at STW and not only offers 6 CAN interfaces, but also a four-port Ethernet switch, a LIN, and a RS232 interface.

With an additional 14 analog and digital inputs and outputs in the standard configuration, the freely-programmable ESX-4CS-GW is also able to take over small tasks for sensor-actuator management. For fast processing of the tasks, the fourth generation of the ESX control units features the Infineon Aurix processor, which works with 300MHz using three 32-bit TriCore processor cores as the so-called ‘Triple-TriCore’, each of which are independent from the other.

Naturally the ESX-4CS-GW complies with the standards for conformity according to CE and E1 as well as the standards for the vehicle, agricultural and construction machine industry. Planning is underway for the certification for safety-orientated applications according to PLd (DIN EN ISO13489-1 2008-12) or SIL 2 (IEC 61508 Edition 2.0 2010-04).
