Caterpillar has introduced the Cat 301 CR (Compact Radius), a micro hydraulic excavator aimed at contractors working in confined spaces, including indoor, demolition, agricultural and landscaping applications.
The one-tonne-class machine can pass through doorways measuring 762 by 1981mm, while its compact radius design minimises overhang to work in tight spaces and alongside fixed structures. An expandable undercarriage improves stability and increases lift capacity compared with the machine it replaces, the Cat 300.9D.
“Customers asked for a machine in the one-ton class that is simple and comfortable to operate, while offering stability for lifting heavy weights. Our new 301 CR excavator delivers,” says Zach Waite, commercial director at Caterpillar Industry Solutions.
“To enhance stability, the 301 CR is 26% wider than the 300.9D, with a fully expanded undercarriage. We also increased lift capacity by more than 80% from the 300.9D to elevate machine performance and flexibility in the field,” he adds.

The excavator has a simplified gauge cluster and side-mounted joystick controls. Its expandable blade and undercarriage can be retracted for access to confined areas, and the compact radius reduces the machine’s footprint when working next to fixed structures. A closed-loop swing system provides faster cycle times and improved energy efficiency, and generates less heat than the 300.9D. A second auxiliary hydraulics option allows mechanical work tools to be operated, a standard LED boom work light supports use at night or inside buildings, and a tilt-up seat provides access to the engine bay and service points.
A foldable ROPS (Roll Over Protection Structure) allows the machine to travel through height-restricted openings when folded, and provides operator protection when raised and secured for operation.
With a maximum operating weight of 1230kg and a folded ROPS height of less than 1829mm, the 301 CR is straightforward to transport. Travel speed reaches up to 3.6km/h, double that of the 300.9D, and track width extends from 730 to 1100mm for added stability. Stick force is 38% higher than the 300.9D at 6.2kN, while bucket force of 9.6kN is 8% higher, aiding productivity in tough digging conditions. Maximum lift capacity is 394kg at a height of 0.91m and a radius of 1.83m to the front. VisionLink gives owners and operators insight into the machine’s operating hours and location.
