Claas has introduced the Arion 5 CMatic, a three-model four-cylinder tractor range that succeeds the Arion 500 series and sits below the six-cylinder Arion 6 CMatic. The series made its public debut at the Innov-Agri show in Ondes, France, on 9 to 10 September.
The range comprises the Arion 5.140, 5.160 and 5.180 CMatic, with maximum outputs of 145, 165 and 180hp (107, 121 and 132kW) from a 4.5-litre four-cylinder engine and peak torque of between 619 and 730Nm at 1,500rpm. Claas positions the models as a compact, lighter and more manoeuvrable alternative to the Arion 6 CMatic, which spans 145 to 205hp over a longer wheelbase.
All three tractors use the continuously variable, power-split CMatic transmission developed and built by Claas. The gearbox includes an automatic trailer overrun brake and a wheel loader mode for front loader work, alongside adaptive drivetrain management. Its Auto Load Anticipation function, which Claas says detects load spikes as tillage implements are lowered and raises engine speed pre-emptively while adjusting the transmission, took a silver medal in the Agritechnica 2025 Innovation Awards and was first shown on the Axion 9.
The range-topping Arion 5.180 CMatic has a permanently available 180hp and a power-to-weight ratio of around 42.8kg/hp. Unladen weights run from 7,280 to 7,700kg, with maximum permissible weights of up to 11,000kg, and all three models carry a 215-litre fuel tank. A K80 hitch rated for a 4t drawbar load, a standard front linkage and a 150-litre/min load-sensing hydraulic system with up to six control circuits equip the tractors for heavier trailers and implements, while a continuously variable 50km/h top speed, reached at 1,490rpm, and Proactiv front axle suspension are aimed at transport work.
In the cab, a fully suspended, low-noise operator environment is paired with the CMotion multifunction lever, which brings the driving controls, eight assignable function keys, rear-linkage control and headland management together under one hand. A Cebis terminal is now fitted as standard in the right-hand armrest and is operated by touchscreen or rotary control. Options include a premium seat with a massage function, semi-active suspension and seat climate control, a multimedia system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and DAB+, and a lighting package with up to 20 LED lights plus step lighting for cab access.
Driver assistance and precision-farming features include the optional Cemos Dialog system, which Claas says uses self-learning algorithms to help optimise output and set ballasting and tyre pressures, and GPS Pilot guidance through the Cemis 1200 terminal. A new automatic reference track change function selects the appropriate guidance line for the machine’s position and direction of travel, and reference lines can be shared between machines. An optional dynamic steering system roughly halves the number of steering wheel turns from lock to lock.
