Caterpillar has introduced the Cat D11 XE, an electric drive version of its largest track-type tractor aimed at mining operations. The manufacturer says the dozer consumes up to 25% less fuel per unit of material moved and shifts 5–10% more material per hour than the next-generation Cat D11.
The electric drivetrain has 60% fewer moving parts than a mechanical drive system, which Caterpillar says helps simplify service and lower owning and operating costs over the machine’s life. The engine drives a generator that sends power through an inverter to two motors, delivering power to the tracks and eliminating the bevel gear used in mechanical drive systems.
The Cat C32B engine operates at a lower high-idle speed, which the OEM says allows the D11 XE to deliver up to 20% longer life between rebuilds than the D11. Planned component repair intervals for the engine, final drives and hydraulic systems increase from 15,000 to 18,000 hours, aligning with the electric drive’s 18,000-hour rebuild centreline. Caterpillar says the model consumes up to 20% less fuel per hour and produces 20–25% fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
“The D11 XE is designed to help customers get more from every hour of operation. By combining the proven capability of the D11 platform with the benefits of electric drive, it delivers meaningful gains in productivity, efficiency and lifecycle value,” says Luke Fischer, product application specialist at Caterpillar. “It also reflects how far dozer performance has advanced, offering up to 25% greater efficiency than today’s D11 and up to 40% greater efficiency than the first D11N introduced in 1986.”

With no gears to shift, the electric drive system is intended to simplify operation. A dedicated drive motor at each track provides power-turn capability, powering both tracks throughout a turn for sharper manoeuvring and greater pryout force. The suspended undercarriage reduces shock load transfer by up to 50%, while electronic steering, ripper and dozer controls and a primary multifunction touchscreen support operation.
The C32B engine delivers the same power and performance as the Cat C32 but with heavier-duty internal components for greater durability. Caterpillar says the D11 XE can achieve similar total operating hours to the D11 with one fewer rebuild over its life. The electric drive generator and motors are designed to last through two machine lives with only rebearing and resealing, and a modular design allows major components to be removed independently.
A new radiator guard and upgraded case and frame are intended to improve durability and reduce maintenance downtime. Larger lift-cylinder trunnion bearings simplify service, and redesigned pin joints with replaceable bearings remove the need for line boring on the ripper, blade and push-arm trunnions. The model shares up to 85% parts commonality with the D11.
Onboard technology options include AutoCarry, which provides automatic blade control during the carry segment to increase productivity by up to 15%; 3D Grade Control using dual ROPS-mounted GNSS antennas and blade-mounted inertial measurement unit sensors; Automated Blade Assist, which uses dual-tilt capability to automate blade movement to key pitch positions; and automatic ripper control. The D11 XE can also be equipped with Cat MineStar solutions, including Command for dozing for remote control and semi-autonomous operation, and Terrain for grading.
