Smart Sensors in Agriculture seminar

The "perfect storm" of population growth, climate change, scarce water and insufficient energy resources means that the farming sector must continue to improvise and make use of all the various technologies available to them to ensure that there is sufficent food for all. Precision farming is just one of the tools available to the farmer and a seminar at the East of England Showground on 1 March 2011) explores the uses of sensors to facilitate continuing improvements to the scope and accuracy of precision in agriculture.

Targeted at design engineers, technicians, students, technical experts and consultants, it will show how sensors are an enabling technology for improving automation, management and robotics whether for plant or livestock husbandry. Nine talks will cover the use of sensors in current and future generations of automated and robotic equipment. Topics will include controlling tractors to +/- 2 cm; finding and “locking on” to a cow teat for Voluntary Milking Systems; and looking for the weeds to hoe while leaving productive plants. More information will come from a supplier of sensors and actuators and we plan to touch on how to get funding and find research partners in the UK and EU. This event is at the same location but the day before the counterpart Precision Farming Event.
