Design Challenge - September 2011

Steffen Pasche

The Scorpio-N concept was born from the desire to construct a compact and versatile construction vehicle. The shape of a scorpion offers several advantages over that of traditional construction vehicles, such as stability and manoeuvrability. With its six legs, the Scorpio-N is easily able to overcome obstacles where vehicles with wheels or tracks would have to give up. The machine has two gripper arms, meaning one can hold down or raise the work material while one of a variety of tools – such as saws, crushers or drills – is quickly attached to the other gripper. With seven segments, the scorpion-like tail forms a sort of small mobile crane, which can be used to winch or lift smaller loads, or provide an option for a third tool to be carried. With the benefits of its interchangeable tools and kinematics of its propulsion system, the
Scorpio-N is ideal for construction and demotion, as well as forestry. It is always ready!
