Versatility is probably the main characteristic of wheeled excavators. They usually mount the most sophisticated equipments in order to accomplish a wide range of tasks. Most of these equipments can be found on the crawler excavators technical specifications but they still cannot offer the mobility of the wheeled machines.
On the other hand tracked excavators, due to the bigger surface of the undercarriage, offer a greater working stability and less pressure on the ground.
The Poclain 90P HY LGP concept proposes a way to greatly reduce the ground pressure by means of six independent outriggers: 4 universal type stabilisers + 2 extra large stabilisers. All of them would fold within the overall machine dimensions.
This LGP wheeled excavator would offer a support surface two and half times greater than a conventional wheeled excavator and similar to a HD crawler excavator surface. These remarkably well balanced characteristics would involve a higher lifting capacity for a wheeled digger. The machine would also benefit from the independent pivoting pads to offer a greater working stability on uneven ground.
In addition to a higher performance than a conventional wheeled excavator, it would offer an additional respect for the environment.
Apart from earthmoving, other tasks like trenching, ditching, ditch-cleaning, boring or handling are typically carried out by wheeled excavators in rural environment. In this areas ground care is especially important since arable sites, tracks and paths are usually sensible and prone to be damaged. Instead of creating four deep typical “footprints”, impact would be minimized by the LGP system due to the higher contact surface and low ground pressure. Thus, well matched to the job and terrain, this machine would suit rural contractors or farmers.
As well as recovering the heat from the hydraulic oil tank, the parallel hybrid system would offer the possibility of transfer the energy from the hydraulic stabilisers.
